  1. Afghan election recount begins

    Afghanistan: Election workers started recounting suspect ballots on Monday and an official said that a ruling on whether President Hamid Karzai won or will face a run-off is due next week.

    The August election was hampered by violence and claims of vote-rigging that have plunged the country into a crisis while resistance fighters are expanding from their southern strongholds into the north and west.

    About 13 per cent of the country’s approximately 26,300 polling stations are considered questionable.

  2. Dutch MPs say No to Afghan war

    Netherlands: Parliament has approved a resolution calling on the government not to extend its military intervention in Afghanistan.

    The motion passed on Tuesday indicates that the country’s cabinet will face strong opposition if it caves in to US and British pressure to prolong the mission beyond August.
