Gyps africanus is the most widespread and common vulture in Africa. Its global population has been estimated at 270,000 individuals.From BirdLife:The White-backed Vulture is a typical vulture, with only down feathers on the head and neck, very broad wings and short tail. Like other vultures it is a scavenger, feeding mostly from carcasses of animals which it finds by soaring over savannah and around human habitation. It often moves in flocks. It requires tall trees for nesting.

Over the past few days, atlasers eagerly kept their eyes on the website, waiting to watch the meter tick over to the one millionth bird. Finally it did. The millionth record was recorded by atlaser Christopher Patton, that of a White-backed Vulture Gyps africanus, ironically a species predicted to be negatively affected by climate and land-use change.
