This is a video from Canada of the anti-war demonstration organized by the Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War and affiliates.
There is a demonstration in the west coastal village of Noordwijk, the Netherlands, right now, against the Afghanistan war. Dutch NOS TV showed images. Also supporters of the PvdA party, part of the government coalition, had brought a party banner to the demonstration.
The demonstration is during the NATO summit in Noordwijk. The demonstration is on the Vuurtorenplein square.
By the way, yesterday knowledgeable Indonesians of the Committee of Dutch Honorary Debts confirmed to me that the Dutch military calling their base in Afghanistan “Poentjak” (Indonesian: puncak) is indeed a reference to the Dutch colonial war of 1945-1949 to strangle the infant Republic of Indonesia, proclaimed 0n 17 August 1945, at its birth. Dutch forces committed many war crimes during this colonial war.
More specifically, Poentjak used to be the name of a base of the infamous Dutch Captain Raymond Westerling, guilty of killing many unarmed Indonesians in Sulawesi and Java islands. In 1950, after the Dutch government at last had recognized Indonesian independence, Westerling tried a bloody, failed, coup d état in Indonesia. Later, he was involved in an attempt at coup d état against the Dutch government, accusing it of not being hardline enough against Indonesia. Should such a person, such a colonial past, really be honoured? It does not sound positive about what Dutch troops are doing in Afghanistan now; including killing villagers with long distance guns.

150 vredesdemonstranten in Noordwijk - Vanavond fakkelwakes in 18 steden
Noordwijk, 25 oktober 2007 -
Zo’n 150 vredesdemonstranten hebben vanmiddag in het door
een grote politiemacht bezette Noordwijk gedemonstreerd tegen
de afspraken die de NAVO even verderop wilde maken om de
huidige missie in Afghanistan voort te zetten. Zij zagen
zichzelf als de stem van de meerderheid van de bevolking die
zich in allerlei opiniepeilingen tegen de missie hebben
uitgesproken en zeker tegen de verlenging ervan.
‘Onze militairen daar weten niet meer wat te doen,
hulporganisaties bepleiten een strikte scheiding van hulp en
vechten en Tweede Kamerleden zouden zich ernstig af moeten
vragen of dit wel de missie is waar zij twee jaar geleden mee
in hebben gestemd,’ aldus GroenLinks partijvoorzitter Henk
Nijhof die de NAVO opriep plaats te maken voor de VN en voor
politieke oplossingen in plaats van militaire.
SP Tweede Kamerlid Sadet Karabulut wees erop dat nog geen
10% van de Nederlandse militairen in Afghanistan
wederopbouwwerk doen in de daarvoor ingerichte Provincial
Reconstruction Teams. De overige 90% heeft voornamelijk een
gevechtstaak. ‘Wederopbouw doe je niet met bommen. Wij voeren
daar oorlog. En de meeste militairen menen dat ze daarvoor
niet naar Afghanistan zijn gestuurd.’
‘De NAVO is nu ook Noordwijk binnengevallen, met
mijnenvegers voor de kust en pantserhouwitsers op het
strand,’ aldus Bart Griffioen van de coalitie Stop de Oorlog.
Hij noemde het weerzinwekkend dat, nog geen week nadat naar
buiten is gekomen dat Nederland met een dergelijke
pantserhouwitser een oorlogsmisdaad in Uruzgan is begaan, een
dergelijk wapentuig in volle glorie in Noordwijk ten toon
wordt gesteld. Hij vroeg zich af wat de Nederlandse regering
eigenlijk nog meer verzweeg over Nederlandse gewelddadige
operaties in Afghanistan.
José van Leeuwen, die namens het Platform tegen de ‘Nieuwe
Oorlog’ sprak, hekelde de absurde politie-inzet in Noordwijk
en sprak de burgemeester aan op het feit dat een in haar
eentje geweldloos opererende vredesactiviste gisteren na een
protest dat nog geen 3 minuten duurde ruim vijf uur in een
politiecel heeft gezeten. Verder stelde zij dat het kabinet
Balkenende inderdaad de VOC-mentaliteit weer nieuw leven
inblies, door belangen van Nederlandse oliemaatschappijen in
centraal Azie na te jagen en enkel voor dat doel op de eerste
rang in de oorlogvoering wilde zitten.
De laatste spreker was Klaas Meijer van de Nieuwe Doorbraak
binnen de Partij van de Arbeid. Hij verwoordde de stem van
een meerderheid van de PvdA-leden, inclusief internationaal
secretaris Marije Laffeber, die tegen verlenging van de
missie in Uruzgan zijn. Hij riep PvdA-leden op om zich aan te
sluiten bij allerlei lokale samenwerkingsverbanden tegen de
verlenging van de missie in Uruzgan.
Vanavond worden in 18 steden (Almere, Amersfoort,
Amsterdam, Breda, Den Haag, Den Helder, Enschede, Groningen,
Heerlen, Hengelo, Landgraaf, Leeuwarden, Leiden, Nijmegen,
Rotterdam, Schiedam, Sittard en Venray) fakkelwakes gehouden
tegen de verlenging van de missie in Uruzgan.
De demonstratie in Noordwijk werd afgesloten met een zgn.
‘die in’ waarbij stil werd gelegen bij de doden die bij de
Nederlandse missie in Uruzgan zijn gevallen. Daarvoor had de
clowns army nog een geheim wapen aangeboden aan de NAVO via
de corpschef van politie die hen de toegang tot de NAVO had
ontzegd.

NATO scales down plans for rapid reaction force

NOORDWIJK, Netherlands (Reuters) - NATO defense ministers agreed on Thursday to scale down the alliance’s ambition to keep a 25,000-strong rapid reaction force on standby, ready to intervene in crises around the world.
The brainchild of former U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, the NATO Response Force (NRF), was conceived to field troops from a pool of up to 25,000 at five days’ notice and was a key part of efforts to revamp the alliance after the Cold War.
The project was a victim of the pressure on NATO members to maintain a 40,000-strong force in Afghanistan, a mission some argue is proof that NATO is in any case revamping its armies to meet far-flung military challenges.
“The number of forces we will have on permanent stand-by will decrease,” NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer told a news conference after talks in the Dutch coastal resort of Noordwijk.
Alliance sources said last month the future of the NRF was in question after allies, including the United States, withdrew earlier pledges of troops or equipment, saying they were needed for operations such as Afghanistan or Kosovo.
NATO military chiefs subsequently suggested a “graduated approach” under which only a much-reduced core of the NRF would survive, with the understanding that national contingents could be quickly added as needed.
De Hoop Scheffer said military chiefs would study how such a core NRF might look, but stressed the move would still allow it to take on the seven original missions — from evacuations to counter-terrorism — for which it was originally conceived.
He conceded the difficulties of such an approach, which could lead to deployments being delayed as countries balked at sending troops to reinforce any core NRF presence.
“I admit that the pressure on forces is very big indeed and that force generation is never an easy process,” he said.
The NRF was declared fully operational at a NATO summit a year ago but has not been deployed on any mission since. Parts of it were used to fly in and distribute relief to victims of the October 2005 earthquake in Pakistan.
There is also intermittent debate within the alliance as to whether it could be used to plug shortfalls in the Afghanistan peace force, something which several nations strongly oppose.
