Travolta termed hypocrite for ‘Hairspray’ role by gay rights activists

ANI Thursday 14th June, 2007

Washington, June 14 : ‘Pulp Fiction’ star John Travolta has been criticised [by] gay rights activists for playing a cross-dressing character in cult musical ‘Hairspray‘, for they feel that the role was at odds with the actor’s religious beliefs.

The Oscar nominee, who is a follower of Scientology, appears in women’s wear to play Edna Tumblad in the movie.

The role was originally played by drag queen Divine in John Waters’ 1998 adaptation.

Kevin Naff of gay website Blade says that Travolta’s portrayal of Tumblad shows his hypocrisy.

He insists that the actor’s involvement with the flick is disingenuous.

“Travolta, a prominent Scientologist, has no business for reprising an iconic gay role,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

“It’s well known that Scientology rejects gays and lesbians as members and even operates reparative therapy clinics to ‘cure’ homosexuality. Divine is spinning in his grave,” he added.

  1. Lift the Ban on Gays in the Military

Since “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” became law, over 11,000 servicemembers have been discharged because of their sexuality. The number of servicemembers who have left on their own volition, or have decided not to re-enlist is not documented. The government has spent over $363 million dollars in taxpayer money to implement this unfair legislation.

Watch the story of one Arabic translator who was fired from the Navy for being gay:

After watching Stephen Benjamin’s story, we hope that you are as disturbed by the inability for gays to openly serve in the US military as we are. (You can also read more about Stephen’s experiences and call to lift the ban in his New York Times op-ed, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Translate.”) Please sign the petition to have your Member of Congress sign on to the Military Readiness Enhancement Act.
