A UN expert called torture in Iraq “totally out of hand,” adding, “the situation is so bad many people say it is worse than it has been in the times of Saddam Hussein.”See also here.He added, “That means something, because the torture methods applied under Saddam Hussein were the worst you could imagine.”
A report released by the UN states that bodies in the Baghdad morgue “often bear signs of severe torture.”

Women for Peace Call for an End to the WarBush administration sends Canadian to torture.The National Organization for Women (NOW) and CodePink held Women for Peace Day yesterday, drawing attention to the strong presence of women in the peace movement.
The event was part of Camp Democracy, a month-long camp set up on the National Mall in Washington, DC to promote peace and nonviolence.
Women for Peace Day featured discussions on how to bring troops home from Iraq peacefully, candidates who want to send troops home from Iraq, and an update on violence against women in Juarez.

On September 16th, Sgt. Ricky Clousing spoke on US war crimes in Iraq and why he became a resister to this war. He is facing court martial on a charge of desertion.
He spoke at Camp Democracy’s encampment at the National Mall in Washington, DC. before an overflow audience that included activists from across the nation as well as many tourists.

This so-called compromise between Bush and the three Republican senators
over the treatment of PRISONERS (and can we PLEASE stop calling them
“detainees”?), i s a bunch of hooey. It was never anything more than a
propaganda bit dreamed up by Karl Rove to pretend the Republicans don’t
constantly rubber-stamp every evil Bush policy and demand.
The Republicans did their Kabuki theater for a few days, got lots of TV
air time, distracted us from the war in Iraq — which is getting more
violent and bloody every single day that passes — and, probably,
persuaded a lot of pointy-headed rightwingers that Bush had to give in
on torture, lifetime imprisonment without a real trial, and his desire
that there be no appeal anywhere for those who are wrongfully
imprisoned. Most of the prisoners in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo have been
and still are INNOCENT of any terrorist activities. Innocent. And yet,
they have been abused and tortured and held for years without ever being
charged with anything more than being in the wrong place at the wrong
(for them) time. Many of them were caught up in random street sweeps
and/or SOLD TO the U.S. by warlords for the bounty money. Yeah, that’ll
go a long way toward convincing those who live in the Middle East how
wonderful our “democracy” is .
This editorial a bit of a departure for the Washington Post editorial
page, which spends most of its time kissing Bush’s butt.
