Mauritius: extinct animals [Environment, Birds, Reptiles, Biology] — Administrator @ 3:58 pm


This is a video of a Night Heron on giant lilypads in Mauritius.

Julian Hume, a participant in the Mauritius expedition to find remains of the extinct dodo and its environment, writes on extinct animal species of the Indian ocean island.

Apart from the dodo, they include: Mauritius Night Heron Nycticorax mauritianus; Flamingo Phoenicopterus rubra; Pygmy Cormorant Phalacrocorax africanus; Mauritian Sheldgoose Alopochen mauritianus; Theodore’s Teal Anas theodori; Dutch Pigeon Alectroenas nitidissima; Van den Broecke’s red rail Aphanapteryx bonasia; Mauritian coot Fulica newtoni; Broad-billed Parrot Lophopsittacus mauritianus; Thirioux’s grey parrot Psittacula bensoni; Commerson’s Owl Mascarenotus sauzieri; Giant Skink Leiolopisma (Didosaurus) mauritiana; Giant tortoise Cylindraspis sp., Lesser Flying Fox Pteropus subniger.
