Polar bear cubs and others at Ouwehand’s zoo [Animals, Visual arts] — Administrator @ 10:59 am

This is a video clip from the USA about a Plecostomus catfish.

Ouwehand’s zoo is near Rhenen, in The Netherlands.

About twenty years ago, they had plans to specialize in animals from Europe and Asia only.

They had zebras, but plans to get them out, as these African animals did not fit then in the new concept.

Part of the Eurasia plans was a forest for brown bears who had been treatly badly in, eg, circuses, to rehabilitate them.

That part of the plans is there now.

A big plot of coniferous forest in hilly country is now home to Eurasian brown bears and wolves.

However, the rest of the Eurasia only plans was scrapped later.

Today at Ouwehand’s, you can still see piranhas and nandus from South America.

And Bennett’s wallabies (including an albino) and emus from Australia.

And many African animals.

Not just zebras.

Also lions, giraffe, and impalas.

Also, many stone sculptures from Zimbabwe throughout the zoo; many of them depicting animals.

The building for warthogs and meerkats from South Africa was painted in the colourful geometrical mural style of South African Ndbele women artists.

Close to its meerkat relatives were yellow mongoose.

In the aquarium, Plecostomus catfish.

This is a video about scientists working in Svalbard in Norway, researching the impacts of global warming on polar bears and the Arctic.

I’ll talk about the polar bear triplets, born recently in the zoo, later.

Polar bears: see also here.

And here.
